From Language to Experience: New Expressions of Chinese Language and Culture for Global Students
In the design of the Fenix Museum Rotterdam, Chinese architect Yansong Ma proposes a shift from “symbolic cognition” to “experiential perception.” Rather than understanding Chinese culture through concrete symbols such as lanterns, dragons, dumplings, or red envelopes, this approach emphasizes sensing and experiencing culture through space, constructing an immersive pathway to “feel China.”
In international Chinese language education, traditional approaches focus on the systematic teaching of character form, pronunciation, and meaning, including structural principles such as pictographs, ideographs, and phonetic compounds. Combined with classical texts, historical allusions, and cultural symbols, this method helps learners build a clear and solid linguistic and cultural framework. By contrast, experiential pedagogy follows a process of “experience–perception–expression,” embedding language learning in contextualized activities and cultural practices. Through participation and embodied engagement, learners develop emotional resonance and naturally generate language output, moving from passive understanding to active use.
The 2026 Teacher Training Program of the Groningen Confucius Institute, themed “From Language to Experience: New Expressions of Chinese Language and Culture for the World,” integrates these two approaches. While maintaining a strong foundation in linguistic structure, it emphasizes situating language learning within authentic contexts and interactive experiences to enhance engagement and cultural identification.
The program brings together experts from multiple fields. Professor Wenhua Hu will explore character-form teaching from a structural perspective; Professor Philip Vanhaelemeersch will examine the reception of Chinese narratives in Europe; and Director Lei Zhang will address key challenges in Mandarin pronunciation teaching.
In addition, the Groningen Confucius Institute teaching team will share practical classroom approaches centered on “less explanation, more experience.” Together, these perspectives present an integrated pathway from linguistic structure to cultural narrative, and from phonetic training to experiential learning, contributing to innovative practices in global Chinese language education.
